Veterans make real decisions based on what they read about VA benefits. This page explains how the guides on this site are produced and kept accurate.
Our sources
Guides are based on primary sources:
- VA.gov, for eligibility rules, forms, processes, pay rates, and processing times
- Title 38 of the Code of Federal Regulations, for the rules on service connection and the rating schedule
- Title 38 of the United States Code, for the underlying law
- Published decisions of the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims and the Federal Circuit, where a court ruling affects how a rule is applied
Every guide lists its sources at the bottom of the page, with links, so you can check them.
We do not rely on forums, social media, or other websites as sources for what the rules are.
How a guide is written
- The topic is researched against the sources above.
- A draft is written in plain English.
- Figures such as pay rates, percentages, deadlines, and form numbers are checked against the source.
- The guide is reviewed before publication.
- The page is dated.
Some guides are drafted with the help of AI writing tools. Every guide is checked against the primary sources and reviewed by the site’s editor before it is published. A person is responsible for everything on this site.
Keeping guides current
- Pay rates are updated each December when the new cost-of-living adjustment takes effect.
- Processing times are updated from VA’s published monthly figure.
- Rule changes are added when a regulation is finalized. Proposed rules are described as proposed.
- Each guide shows a last reviewed date. All guides are reviewed at least once a year.
