When VA grants a claim, it pays you back to your effective date in one lump sum. This back pay calculator estimates that amount. It uses the rate VA actually paid in each year, so a claim that spans several years is worked out at each year’s own rate.

How to use the back pay calculator
- Effective date. Usually the date VA received your claim or your Intent to File. It is printed in your decision letter for each condition.
- Decision date. The date on your decision letter. If you are still waiting, leave it as today to see what has built up so far.
- Combined rating. Your overall rating, not an individual condition’s rating. If you are not sure, use the VA disability calculator.
How the estimate is worked out
- VA pay starts on the first day of the month after your effective date. An effective date of June 20 means pay begins July 1.
- Back pay covers each month from then through the month before your decision. After that, regular monthly payments take over.
- Each month is paid at the rate in force at that time. VA rates change every December 1.
An example
An effective date of June 20, 2025, a decision in early April 2026, and a 50% rating gives nine months of back pay: five months at the 2025 rate of $1,102.04 and four months at the 2026 rate of $1,132.90, for a total of $10,041.80.
What this estimate leaves out
| Not included | Effect on your actual payment |
|---|---|
| Dependents | Higher. At 30% and above, a spouse, children, and dependent parents add to each month. |
| A rating that changed during the period | Different. VA pays each stage at its own rate. Run the calculator once for each stage and add the results. |
| Special Monthly Compensation | Higher |
| Separation or severance pay recoupment | Lower |
| Military retired pay offset | Lower for some retirees |
| Fees to an accredited attorney or agent | Lower, if you hired one for an appeal |

Common questions
When will the money arrive? Usually within a few weeks of the decision, often before the paper letter. If a month has passed, call VA at 800-827-1000.
Is back pay taxed? No. VA disability compensation, including retroactive pay, is not taxable.
My effective date looks wrong. What can I do? Effective dates are a common source of error, especially when VA overlooks an Intent to File. You generally have one year from the decision to ask for a review. See VA back pay and effective dates.
Why does the calculator stop at November 2020? It carries VA’s rate tables from the 2021 rate year onward. For an earlier effective date, the past rate tables on VA.gov give each year’s figures.
Protect your effective date
The single biggest factor in back pay is the effective date, and the easiest way to protect it is an Intent to File. It takes a few minutes and can be worth thousands.
