VA Personal Statement Writer: Build Your Statement in Support of Claim

The Playbook › Tools, state benefits and reference

A personal statement is your chance to tell VA, in your own words, what happened in service and how your condition affects you now. It is evidence, and VA has to consider it. This personal statement writer walks you through the questions VA’s raters care about and turns your answers into a clear, organized statement you can review, sign and send with your claim.

Your answers stay on your device. Nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else. Your answers are kept in this browser so you can come back to finish; use Clear everything when you are done, especially on a shared computer.

1Your claim
2What happened in service

For a secondary claim this part is optional. Describe what you have noticed about how the two conditions are connected, for example that your back pain started after you began limping on the knee.

3What has happened since

For an increase, focus on what has changed since your last rating and when it changed.

4Your symptoms now

Raters work from how often, how long and how severe. Numbers help more than adjectives.

How the personal statement writer works

  1. Tell it about your claim. The condition, and whether you are claiming it for the first time, as secondary to a condition you are already rated for, or as an increase.
  2. Answer the questions in order. What happened in service, what has happened since, your symptoms now, and how they affect your work and daily life. Tips for your type of condition appear as you go.
  3. Write your statement. The tool arranges your answers under clear headings and adds a certification and signature line.
  4. Check the notes. It points out common gaps, such as missing numbers for how often and how long.
  5. Copy, download or print it. Read it through, change anything that is not exactly right, then sign and date it.

The statement is built from your own words. The tool does not add facts or make your symptoms sound worse than you described. That matters: VA compares your statement with your medical records and your C&P exam, and anything that does not match hurts your credibility.

Your answers stay on your device

Everything happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to this site or anyone else. Your answers are saved in your browser so you can come back and finish later. Use Clear everything when you are done, especially on a shared or public computer.

Do not put your Social Security number in the statement. Add your VA file number by hand on the printed copy, or on VA Form 21-4138.

How to send it to VA

You can submit the statement two ways:

  • Attach it to your claim as a signed document, or
  • Copy the text into the remarks section of VA Form 21-4138, Statement in Support of Claim, and sign the form.

Either way, keep a copy. Reread it before your C&P exam so that what you tell the examiner matches what you wrote.

Tips for a stronger statement

  • Write one statement per condition, or clearly separate each condition.
  • Use numbers. “Flare-ups three to four times a month, lasting two to three days” is something a rater can use. “Often” and “severe” are not.
  • Describe your worst days, not only your average ones, and say how often they happen.
  • Explain gaps. If you did not go to sick call, or did not see a doctor for years, say why.
  • Leave diagnosis and cause to the doctors. Describe what you experience. For the medical link, see nexus letters.
  • Back it up with buddy statements from people who saw what happened or see how it affects you.

Common questions

Is it free? Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit.

Can it write the statement for me? It organizes what you tell it. The facts have to come from you, because you are the one signing that they are true.

Does it work for an increase or a secondary condition? Yes. Choose that option at the start and the questions adjust.
